Get your shopping fix at the latest bazaars in townBy: Yee Jie Min (Mon, 11 May 2009)
Marlena Mansor and husband, Zuhri Yusof at the A:Fair Weekend Bazaar.LADIES, look no further for the latest trends that don’t cost a bomb because here are the bazaars where you can save (money) and shop fashionably.
The ultimate place to beThe sound of drums bellowing throughout Tropicana City Mall drew the crowd towards it and right before your eyes an utopia for shopping.
This is Youthopia (http://chics-closet.blogspot.com/), the world where e-shoppers can see their favourite e-shops go offline and for the young to show off their skills.
"We want to create a permanent platform. As you know, bazaars normally move from one place to another which is tiring. Therefore, we came up with Youthopia where the youth can join and showcase their items and talents," said Angeline Chin, the mastermind behind Youthopia.
Marlena with Syaz’s Gift vendor, Syazlina. This bazaar offers a range of unique and beautiful items such as clothes, shoes, bags, cupcakes and even nail art.
Trendy Confessions Online Boutique and Just Bag it vendor, Trudy Fong said the bazaar is not bad as there are a lot of visitors, is air-conditioned and has entertainment which will draw the crowd. However, she thinks the location is quite isolated in the mall.
Youthopia is held every weekend so if you missed the first, don’t worry because there will be a second and more.

"This is my first time here and it’s pretty good. The prices of items are cheaper than in e-shops and there are a variety of items but I think they need to move the bazaar elsewhere because it is quite isolated," said Sue-Ann Yip, a patron of the bazaar.
In the future Chin hopes to see a collaboration with other bazaar organisers to set up a bazaar which would be bigger and better for vendors and the youth.
The biggest bazaar everWith a total of 105 vendors, A:Fair Weekend Bazaar (http://www.afairweekend.com/) held at SOHO KL is one of the most famous places to have a bazaar.
A:Fair was created by Marlena Mansor, her husband, Zuhri Yusof, and his cousin in February this year and they have organised a total of three bazaars to date.
"SOHO KL is a very famous place to do a bazaar because when you tell people there is a bazaar held here, 10 people will rush to you saying they want to join. The location is also great with ample space for vendors, ample parking space and nice people," said Marlena.
The uniqueness of the bazaar is the standardisation of necessities provided to vendors such as a 6’ x 3’ table, table cloth, signage, tags and even free lunch.
Also, all the vendors are placed on the first level in a circle so that visitors would be able to see every vendor and it is comfortable to walk around with the air blowing and ample space.
"I think bazaars is a good platform for young people and here, the services are pretty good because they provide signage and tags, and the location is very central and customers are good," said Dude & Dudette vendor, Sarah Ho.
Additionally, A:Fair Initiative was launched to help entrepreneurs, traders, retrenched workers and unemployed graduates where they are encouraged to try opening a booth at the bazaar.
The crowd at Youthopia.Activities at the bazaar include Battle of the Talent where bands and performers battle it out on stage, live performances on three different stages at SOHO KL, runway show for vendors to parade their items, business talks, traders incubation and health screenings.
There is much to expect from A:Fair’s bazaars because they will be signing a long-term contract with SOHO KL which will allow them to hold a bazaar every fourth weekend of the month.
Furthermore, the next upcoming bazaars will be held at CapSquare, Kuala Lumpur and Cineleisure Damansara.
Absolutely a mustClothes, bags, shoes and accessories are definitely a must in a woman’s wardrobe and at Absolute Bazaar you are bound to get all under one roof.
"My friend who had an e-shop wanted to have a place to sell her items and most bazaars are in Kuala Lumpur which led us to think of having one here. So, we searched and found 3K Inn, Subang Jaya suitable to have a bazaar," said Sharylynna Foo, who manages Absolute Bazaar.
The bazaar features items mostly from e-shops such as Lah Lah Land, Vintage Biri Biri and Oh! Popsicles, to name a few and has an overwhelming response from other vendors.
Lush Serendipity vendor Grace Chew said the bazaar is better compared to others because there are less vendors which makes it less packed and the location is really good because most of the visitors made up of college students with the higher buying and bargaining power.
"The bazaar is just a starting point. Next I want to try to do a fashion show to let the vendors project their items. I don’t want it to be too boring, I want to keep it new for customers to look forward to it," said Foo.
She added that she wants to bring in boutiques for more variety, feature a mini car show or stimulator games for the guys who tagged along and importantly, moving it to a bigger and better place.
